Don't Let a Stuck V-12 Throttle Ruin Your Day

A few weeks ago we were about to chastise a customer for doing a Michael Schumacher impression through our parking lot. Then we noticed the funny smell coming from his brakes as he frantically told us his throttle was stuck. This wasn't the first time we'd seen this on a later XJ-S V-12. The culprit was a small plastic bushing that supports a rod connecting the cruise control actuator to the throttle pedestal. Due to the high under-hood temperatures generated by the XJ-S, the bushing hardens and eventually disintegrates. At that point the rod falls out of position and can jam the throttle pedestal - sometimes in the open position as happened to our customer. Needless to say, we highly recommend that you inspect this bushing carefully - if it has no "give," replacement is definitely in order. This bushing was fitted to 6.0-Liter XJ-40 and X300 cars, and XJ-S 5.3 and 6.0 V-12 from 1992.
